Linocut

  • Linocut is a relief printmaking technique, meaning that you apply ink to the top of a carved surface and when printed the carved away marks on the surface stay white, and the parts of the block that are untouched are where the ink prints.

It’s a negative mark-making technique that allows for bold, gestural marks to create dynamic images full of contrast. And it’s very forgiving! So you don’t need superior drawing skills to master lino, just a sense of adventure.

Lisa runs regular weekly evening classes in Linocut for beginners, and monthly Lino Club sessions for those wishing to further their skills with guidance.

Block Printing

  • Block printing is a relief technique, where ink is transferred onto paper or fabric from a carved or textured object. You can print these blocks with or without a press, using lino, wood or other various materials, even found objects, household items or veggies! It’s fun, immediate and rewarding, allowing for a wide scope of experimentation. It’s also useful to combine with other crafts such as sewing, collage, and ceramics. If you love creating handmade printed textiles to decorate your home, then this (or screen printing) is the workshop for you.

Lisa will occasionally facilitate a one-day weekend workshop in Block Printing, or integrate it into a Screen Printing evening class, so keep an eye on her upcoming workshops.

Drypoint

  • Drypoint is a versatile printmaking process which involves engraving an image into a polycarbonate plate ready for printing on paper. Using etching tools, you will carve the surface with your design creating a unique textured plate to print multiple print editions from. The process of scratching onto the surface creates a slightly raised, rough edge to the lines, known as the burr, giving the printed line a distinctive velvety look. With Lisa’s guidance you will then learn how to ink your plate and print it using an etching press on printmaking paper. This technique is perfect for getting lovely atmospheric images with the application of ink, helping you loosen up and enjoy all that drypoint has to offer.

Lisa will occasionally facilitate a one-day weekend workshop in Drypoint etching, or an evening class course at Creative Arts Napier, so keep an eye on her upcoming workshops (link to mailing list).
